Since Hyundai Motor decided to go from regular steel to SSAB’s Hardox steel when producing the concrete mixers for their special trucks, the demand has surged. For Hyundai’s customers the long-term costs are reduced as the concrete mixer’s service life is doubled – at least.

“Since we started to use drums made of Hardox, the sales have increased drastically,” said Byung-cheol Kang, Sales Manager at Hyundai Motor, South Korea.

Two years ago, Hyundai Motor in South Korea decided to go from regular steel to SSAB’s Hardox abrasion-resistant steel when producing the concrete mixers for their special commercial vehicles. The results include mixer drums, hoppers, and chutes that are much more resistant to abrasion and corrosion than the earlier versions.

“The reason for choosing Hardox is its durability. Compared to other mixer trucks, these last a great deal longer. They have a very long lifespan, so the customer demand is high for mixers made out of Hardox steel,” said Byung-cheol Kang.

Used mainly in the construction industry, the mixer trucks are running in harsh conditions where they constantly transport concrete from one place to another, mixing the concrete as they move along. With the continuous wear and tear the mixers made out of regular steel have to be replaced after a few years, which means a huge amount of extra costs for the customers. With Hardox steel the mixers at least double the service life.

For commercial vehicles it is crucial that they last as long as possible whilst also being efficient and productive. For Hyundai that means not only do they use the best quality material, but they of course also put a major effort into the design. Joo-suk Shim is an engineer designer at the special designs team for commercial vehicles at Hyundai Motor. He is grateful for the collaboration with SSAB when using Hardox steel for the mixers. He met some challenges when Hyundai started to use Hardox steel.

“Hardox steel was harder to work with, because it is so strong and there is less deformation than in conventional steel. SSAB was extremely helpful to us. Firstly, when reviewing the blade design on the drum made of Hardox. Then, when analyzing the discharge rate and mixing effect of the concrete. We received valuable data which we have been able to include in the design,” he said.

The hardest thing was shaping Hardox steel to fit the blade molds. SSAB was operational in getting this to work. Also, welding steel plates in straight lines did not work, so Hyundai made the drum in a slightly different way, using a spiral design. The switch to Hardox steel came mainly from customer demand. The market knew what it wanted and asked for it.

“What differentiate us is that we always pay attention to our customers' opinions and focus on meeting their needs. We include their demands in our design,” said Joo-suk Shim.

Hyundai was determined to listen to the customers and introduced Hardox steel as a competitive feature. Even though there was a cost increase for the high-quality steel from SSAB, the demand went up right away.

“The service life is more than doubled from the earlier design. We offer a lot better quality than our competitors, and we now have a market share of 80 percent compared to previously 50 percent,” said Byung-cheol Kang.

The Hardox In My Body sign on the mixers is something that makes them even more sought after. The traceability of the signs with unique ID number is also a guarantee that a product is made out of genuine Hardox steel.

“You can't tell from simply looking if a mixer is made out of a regular steel plate or if it is actually Hardox. However, when customers see the Hardox In My Body sign they trust that they get quality design because they know the brand,” he said.

For over three decades steel company SSAB has delivered steel plates to England-based My Inner Strenx members Kocurek Excavators, the industry leaders in the manufacture of demolition equipment.

“We never received a faulty steel plate from SSAB,” said David Kocurek, founder and owner director of Kocurek Excavators.

SSAB helps family business Kocurek Excavators in Ipwich, England to constantly push the boundaries on behalf of their worldwide-customers. The extreme forces needed when tearing down buildings with demolition equipment up to 70 meters high is supported by SSAB’s Strenx performance steel to help them stand the test of time.

Kocurek has been using SSAB’s steel in their products for over three decades and finds that the material has several benefits. One of them is that it is so easy to work.

“The key benefit for our company is that we can achieve the high technical results required from the product while welding under normal conditions. I think that is the most important thing for me,” said David Kocurek.

One other benefit has been that SSAB’s plate products are delivered blasted and primed, without any scale or rust on them.

“With the primer we have been able to weld straight on to the plates without any prior cleaning. That is an added benefit with SSAB’s plates. It has saved us a lot of time over the years.”

The demolition excavators’ arms have a length of up to 70 meters. They need to be able to withstand extreme forces when they literarily tear buildings down, piece by piece. The use of Strenx performance steel supports the strength and helps saving weight.

“We are always pushing the limits of what we are achieving with the excavators. We need to make the arms as high as possible, as our customers constantly want to go higher. That is why it is so important that the steel has good fatigue resistance. So, we try to save weight by using a thinner material. Naturally we need to maintain strength, so we select SSAB’s Strenx 700 steel to maintain the strength while reducing the thickness of the plate,” said David Kocurek.

Kocurek’s quality products are in high demand all over the world. As an industry leader, the company exports equipment all throughout Europe. The company also ships to the United States, Philippines and India. Recently there has been a lot of orders being sent to Australia.

“It is very satisfying to have customers traveling from Australia to order equipment from us, and we are sending equipment to all corners of the globe,” he said.

Rebecca Kelly is dealing with spare part orders and service administration at Kocurek. From her perspective it is paramount to use quality material in the products manufactured by Kocurek and being a My Inner Strenx member is proof of this.

“We are very privileged to have been able to join the My Inner Strenx program, it is a reassurance to our customers that we are using the best quality materials, as well as the best quality processes and practices. The My Inner Strenx logo makes it simple and straightforward, you look at a product and you know it is approved,” said Rebecca Kelly.

For the manufacturing process long steel plates are required for the long reach and high reach equipment. SSAB has been able to supply Kocurek with larger plate sizes so the product can be put together with fewer joins.

“When you are building something very long, the fewer joins the better. One of the key points where SSAB has helped us is with sheets that we can use effectively and efficiently for our design, and that are suitable as well as durable for the equipment,” said Rebecca Kelly.

The equipment from Kocurek are sent out to stand the test of time in working conditions where tremendous forces, and the many repetition of these forces, are involved. That is why Kocurek has to use a product that will cope over a long period of time. This is what the customers are paying for.

“People expect something to last if they are putting out a lot of money, so for us Strenx steel is the obvious option. It is a quality product going into our quality demolition equipment.”

ZPUH JK Milosz Kiedrowski, a container manufacturer located in northern Poland, started in 2001 to closely cooperate with the Swedish company ILAB Container AB, thus accessing the Scandinavian market. In 2008, JK launched the production of light containers made from high-strength steel.

From the very beginning, it was clear to the management of JK that the steel they used must be produced by SSAB due to its superior quality and because a majority of Scandinavian customers expected containers made from SSAB steel. The initial challenges for ILAB and JK included understanding the new material and learning how to take advantage of its benefits. From the start, SSAB specialists provided excellent support and assistance.

JK purchased state-of-the-art machines for cutting and bending, as well as new welding trucks. Some of the trucks are semi-automated. The purchase of the machinery was partly funded from the EU budget.

The new containers are lighter and stronger than the other makes and can take up to one tonne more per load. Along with their more streamlined shape, they offer fuel savings during transportation of around 14%. Thus the profits are both environmental and financial. Sales in Scandinavia have since risen, and today they remain at a steady and high level.

Since taking over control of the company, CEO and owner Milosz Kiedrowski has managed well; production has risen from 11,000 containers in 2015 to 15,500 in 2017.

Ninety per cent of all containers produced by JK for the Scandinavian market are light containers made from SSAB high-strength steel. The main steel grades that JK buys from SSAB are Strenx™ 700 CR, Strenx™ 700 MC, Hardox® 400 and Hardox® 450. SSAB M43 can be quenched in water instead of aqueous quenching fluids or oil for a cheaper, safer and more environmentally friendly process. It saves energy and time in production and reduces CO2 emissions.

Heat treatment results in a fully martensitic, fine-grain microstructure with an unmatched hardness to toughness ratio. SSAB M43 can reach 3 times higher toughness than a medium alloyed chrome-vanadium or chrome-molybdenum steel. Typical hardness and toughness values are 58 HRC and 25 J/cm2 at +20°C.

For even greater toughness, low-temperature tempering is enough to reach > 30 J/cm2 with hardness still at a level of 56 HRC. Shearing, blanking and piercing can be executed without a risk of micro-cracking, thereby avoiding more time-consuming and expensive processing.
