Magnetic Analysis Corporation (MAC), a leader in nondestructive testing, is celebrating 90 years of designing and supplying innovative inspection instruments and systems for metal manufacturers throughout the world.
Founded in 1928 in Long Island City, NY, at a time when testing usually meant “sampling” procedures that destroyed or altered the product being tested, MAC developed electromagnetic techniques to “nondestructively” test steel bars without modifying the product. In 1934, MAC introduced the first successful tester to identify cracks in steel bars in a production mill.
Today, operating on an international scale, MAC continues to find innovative ways to help tube, bar, wire, and parts producers meet increasingly demanding specifications for quality. “Using our unique ability and experience with multiple technologies, including eddy current, ultrasonic, phased array, and flux leakage, we don’t just sell a product, we sell a solution – a test solution that is based on the customer’s product, mill configuration, specifications, applications, budget and other specific needs” says Dudley Boden, MAC’s President and CEO.

Three facilities form the backbone of the company: MAC’s ISO 9001-2015 certified manufacturing and engineering headquarters in Elmsford, NY; a manufacturing and ISO/IEC 17025:2005 laboratory-certified plant in Boardman, Ohio; and Magnetic Analysis Nordic’s manufacturing plant in Östersund, Sweden.
With the support of its Subsidiaries, Field Engineers and Representatives, MAC serves customers throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, South America, India, Korea, China and Australia.
Magnetic Analysis Corp. (MAC), a worldwide leader in the nondestructive testing industry, has recently promoted Dudley M. Boden to President and Chief Executive Officer.
Having spent 15 years as MAC’s Vice President - Sales & Marketing, Boden brings an in depth understanding of the company’s test systems and customer inspection needs. He is now focused on broadening the firm’s product offering in order to take advantage of new opportunities that have arisen. “Boden’s work in expanding overseas operations and strengthening the sales force and office procedures is providing a firm basis for future successful initiatives under his leadership”, comments MAC Chairman, William S. Gould 3rd.
“As a company, the concept at MAC is that we are more than just an equipment manufacturer”, Boden explains. “To make NDT work you need both equipment and people. Combining these two things is our forte. We partner with the customer to figure out what their real needs are and what the right equipment is for their application. Then we work with them to configure the test system and make it work in a way that is suitable and beneficial for them” he notes. Boden believes the key to the company’s success and what distinguishes it from other NDT companies in the field, is superior customer service which they are able to provide through a staff of experienced and highly knowledgeable Field Engineers and Representatives. Prior to joining MAC, Boden was a Director and General Manager of Minolta Corporation’s Instrument Systems Division. While there, he was responsible for production and sales of quality control equipment. He holds a degree in Photographic Science & Instrumentation from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
MAC specializes in ultrasonic, eddy current, electromagnetic, and flux leakage systems for testing wire, parts, tube and bar during the production process. The new Minimac® 55 brings high performance eddy current testing to a broad range of tube production applications, at an affordable price. This is the first eddy current tester to offer the robust capabilities of Magnetic Analysis Corp.’s top of the line Multimac®, in a powerful, compact design.
The instrument is especially well suited for dedicated, continuous production line testing where simple setup, without the need for constant operator adjustment, is desirable. Once the optimum settings have been established, a lockout mode feature can be set to prevent unauthorized changes.
With MAC’s proprietary Multimac performance, the single channel Minimac 55 instrument features software controls for all functions, including phasing, filtering and sensitivity, all while operating at speeds over 4000 f.p.m. The test results are displayed in full-color polar and linear mode showing real time, true wave form signals for easy review on a separate on-site monitor or at remote locations. The Track screen depicts the test product’s length, with data on line speed, end suppression, flaw tracking, piece count and alarm routing.
Linear strip charts and complete test data, as well as an unlimited number of settings can be stored, annotated and recalled from a library on the internal storage device or network. When networked, multiple instruments can share the same library to ensure correct settings in multiple test lines. Setup and monitoring can be handled through a computer network, and reports with customer, product information, defect location, time, amplitude and phase, can be stored locally or on a network server for quick follow up and quality assurance.
Defects and conditions that can be readily detected by the Minimac 55 include finding short surface and some subsurface defects such as laps, slivers and cracks in tube, and locating weld line faults, including short ID or OD defects. The Minimac, using the MID model, can also detect magnetic inclusions such as iron filings in non-ferrous material.
MAC’s broad range of encircling and sector test coils is available for use with the Minimac which can also be configured for flaw or absolute mode, depending on the application. Coil Platforms, including those with DC saturation for testing magnetic material are offered.
