Outokumpu delivers Forta DX 2304 duplex stainless steel rebar for the Cromer coast in the UK. Cromer is an English town located on the stormy North Sea coast which needed to rebuild its sea defences and prepare for rising sea levels.

Cromer is a well-known resort with a historic sea front and beloved beach, with original sea defences of a series of walls and timber groynes, some dating back to 1845. With rising sea levels and storms threatening the area, the town launched a coast protection scheme in 2013 in order to refurbish the sea defences and make them ready for the anticipated sea level rise to come over the next 100 years.

The project included refacing the concrete sea walls, improving parapet walls and repairing timber groynes. In coastal protection, timber groynes play a vital role as they keep as much sand as possible on the beach, to absorb the force of the waves before they hit the sea wall and cliff.

2016-11-28 123128

Says Stephen Jones, Rebar Commercial Manager at Outokumpu: “Stainless steel rebar was chosen to support the concrete because of its superior corrosion resistance. With a critical chloride threshold level ten times greater than carbon steel rebar, stainless steel required less concrete cover while retaining its integrity and strength in spite of chloride ingress from the saltwater. It is virtually maintenance-free, has a low life cycle cost and will maintain its corrosion resistance over the designed life of the sea defences.”

Says North Norfolk District Council Coast Protection Engineer Brian Farrow: “In the new protection scheme, our brief to consultants required that walls and groynes needed to be designed to maintain not only the existing level of defence but they would also need to hold up against rising sea levels. At the same time, keeping the visual character of the seafront and preserving both stable beach and beach access were important for us. Now completed, the coast protection scheme ensures that the Cromer Coast beach and sea front is there for the next generation to enjoy.”

To provide solution to projects and applications in areas with higher risk of corrosion, Outokumpu now offers its Deco surfaces on Outokumpu Forta DX 2205 duplex stainless steel. Forta DX 2205 has proven to sufficiently weather even in the warm marine environments for example in the Middle East.

In the past few decades, stainless steel has become the choice for the most beautiful landmarks around the world thanks to its perfect combination of durability, corrosion resistance and aesthetics. Among the stainless steel grades, the austenitic stainless steel grade Outokumpu Supra 316/316L has proved to be the most popular choice for the architectural applications. However, certain demanding conditions, like the warm marine environment, which suffer from a lack of rain and dusty winds, expose the material to a risk of corrosion that may compromise the aesthetic appearance and potentially even its load-bearing capacity in the long term. For these environments Outokumpu Forta DX 2205 provides even better corrosion resistance which also allows thinner plates and thus weight reduction.

2014-07-15 071744Says Outokumpu Product Manager Jörn Teipel: “Outokumpu Supra 316/316L is a great material, which has suited well the needs of our customers around the world. It has been used with Outokumpu Deco surface finish in famous landmarks such as One World Trade Center in New York, USA, Birmingham New Street Station in UK, and Ping An Finance Center in Shenzhen, China. However, we always strive to find the optimal solution for our customers, and to address the specific concerns of our customers, we wanted to take on the challenge and look for a solution for it."

Careful analysis of various experiments and testing indicate that higher-performance grade, often in combination with a good surface finish and established cleaning routines, is required to maintain pristine surface of stainless steel in this environment.

Teipel says, “Grade and surface are the two major factors in selecting stainless steel materials. When the right combination of grade and surface finish is selected, the material can demonstrate its real value and become less expensive over the lifecycle due to its low maintenance costs. At Outokumpu, we have a dedicated team that is specialized in guiding and consulting our customers in selection of materials. The Deco pattern on Forta DX 2205 will give confidence to customers designing landmarks even in challenging environments.”

2014-07-15 071744Outokumpu’s ferrochrome and stainless steel production sites in Tornio, Finland, have worked systematically towards a zero-waste-to-landfill production system for decades. Outokumpu’s business is in fact based on recycled steel scrap as main raw material of the produced stainless steel. The goal of circular economy is to put an end to waste through recycling and salvaging valuable materials from processes. In the 2015 Paris Climate Talks, the Kemi-Tornio area of Northern Finland was presented by research institute Nordregio as a prime example of an industrial region implementing the circular economy approach.

Today, the Tornio mill is able to commercialize a full 100% of slag side streams which can be sold to private companies and households or reutilized in Outokumpu’s own processes and construction projects.

Says Juha Ylimaunu, Outokumpu’s Vice President, Sustainability and Environment: “Outokumpu has put great effort into commercializing the by-products of our plants. For instance, the side streams from ferrochrome production have been utilized since the Tornio plant first started operating in 1968. Outokumpu’s ferrochrome furnace has a unique clean-tech design, which produces both ferrochrome and a commercially viable slag product.”

Slag is the mineral based by-product which is essential material in ore melting process. Slag products can be utilized to replace virgin materials such as crushed stone, for instance in road foundations.

“We study all material streams from production in order to find means of fully reusing or selling them as products on the market. According to estimates, the use of Outokumpu’s slag products has saved over 20 million cubic meters worth of virgin materials in natural gravel in Northern Finland”, Ylimaunu says.

2014-07-15 071744Outokumpu has just filed antidumping and countervailing duty petitions against Chinese importers together with other American stainless steel producers – AK Steel Corporation, Allegheny Ludlum LLC (ATI Flat Rolled Products) and North American Stainless. Stainless steel producers charge in the antidumping duty petitions that unfairly traded imports of stainless steel sheet and strip from China are causing material injury to the American industry of stainless steel, as Chinese producers are selling their products in the American markets at prices less than their fair value, thereby significantly undercutting American market prices. The countervailing duty petition alleges that Chinese government has given significant subsidies to the Chinese stainless steel industry. The share of imports from China to the NAFTA region has been rising in the recent years.

Says Outokumpu’s Michael Williams, President and Head of Coil Americas: “We see this as a step forward in ensuring and promoting fair market practices and wish for a speedy resolution to this matter.”

Commerce Department and U.S. International Trade Commission will now begin their preliminary investigations which are expected to be finalized during the first quarter. The entire investigative process will take approximately one year, and it is expected to be ready in the first quarter of 2017.

A stainless steel fuel tank developed by Outokumpu received the New Applications Award by ISSF (International Stainless Steel Forum) in the Best New Development Award category at the ISSF Annual Conference in Hong Kong, China.

Outokumpu FuelTank 1049 Property of TechROi

Outokumpu and the Swedish fuel system company TechROi Fuel Systems (TFS) developed a new innovative stainless steel fuel tank. Stainless steel properties make the tank a competitive alternative for plastic tanks. Use of Outokumpu HyTens® steel grade allowed extremely thin walls and tailored strength, making the tank circa three kilograms lighter than the conventional fuel tank made of plastic, thus reducing the overall vehicle weight and making the car less fuel consuming and consequently mitigating emissions.

According to the ISSF, the winning concept provides a combination of good design, appropriate material selection, engineering expertise and sufficient delivery reliability. The stainless steel fuel tank is superior in terms of crashworthiness and does not need surface treatment or maintenance.

Said Outokumpu CEO Mika Seitovirta: “We are very pleased with the ISSF’s recognition of this innovation, which showcases the potential that stainless steel and customer focused innovation have in meeting the demands of car industry. As a versatile, long-lasting and 100% recyclable material, stainless steel offers great opportunities for a number of industries to create a more sustainable future.”

The award received is the first ISSF New Applications award for Outokumpu. The ISSF awarded Outokumpu for Sustainability in 2011 for reducing landfill waste in Sheffield, UK and in 2014 for a long-term study assessing the risk of cancer among the stainless steel industry employees in Outokumpu’s Kemi and Tornio sites in Finland.

2014-07-15 071744Outokumpu together with number of other companies have reached full and final settlement agreement on sanitary copper tube cartel claims.

In 2012 Outokumpu was served with a damages contribution claim in the English court by IMI (IMI Plc and IMI Kynoch Ltd) and Boliden AB, after Boliden AB and IMI were served claims for financial loss by members of the Travis Perkins Group. These claims related to a 2004 ruling by the European Commission which concluded that a number of companies were involved in price fixing and market sharing in the sanitary copper tube sector in Europe between June 1988 and March 2001.

Outokumpu considered the claim for damages in the English court proceedings to lack merit, but has decided to contribute to the settlement in order to bring this matter to an end.

Says Head of Corporate Affairs and Compliance Kimmo Karihtala: “We consider this settlement to be justified, as it is in our best interest to avoid further expense, inconvenience and burden of continuing litigation, and to get a final resolution in all claims in relation to sanitary copper tube cartel.”

In addition to Outokumpu the settlement covers also all former Outokumpu subsidiaries included in the claims. The settlement amount is not significant, and it will be booked as a non-recurring item in the third quarter 2014 results.

Outokumpu stainless steel gives a new look for the New Street station in Birmingham, UK. More than 8 000 bright polished, laser-cut panels of stainless steel, altogether more than 20 000 square meters, will cover the façade of the station. Outokumpu supplies up to 400 tons of stainless steel for the cladding of the building.

station

140 000 passengers use the Birmingham train station daily, which makes it one of the busiest train stations in the UK. Originally it was built accommodate to less than half that number in the 1960s. Network Rail is now undertaking redevelopment work which will give passengers a concourse with three and a half times more space, more accessible platforms with new escalators and lifts. During the work, the concrete exterior of the building will be cladded in stainless steel.

Martifer is managing the entire project that started in 2010 in the Birmingham city centre. They requested a very brightly polished stainless steel for the façade of the building. All of the stainless steel in the new New Street station comes from Outokumpu. Tornio produced three-millimeter 316 coils which were then cut to length, bright polished and finished in Sheffield by Outokumpu and its subcontractor, a long-time partner of Outokumpu who was recommended to the customer by Outokumpu. Outokumpu’s plate service centre in Sheffield also advised the station contractors on how to handle stainless steel.

station1

“The stainless steel façade is an integral element of our project to completely transform Birmingham New Street station. We are working in and around an original 1960s structure that has long given a tired and poor impression to the busiest station outside of London and Britain’s second city.  The steel cladding transforms the dated structure into a stunning, 21st century, world class building and puts the station on the map as a landmark in Birmingham, adding to the city's growing reputation for good design. The steel cladding completed so far has already created a buzz around the city and all involved are excited about the future final completion,” says Chris Montgomery, Network Rail Project Director.

“After a careful market analysis and detailed tendering process, Martifer selected Outokumpu due to the high-end characteristics of the product and the confidence instilled in us during the several technical meetings that preceded the order issue. As the extreme complexity of this project is only surpassable through careful management of processes and adequate monitoring of all operations, Outokumpu proved to be the partner we needed for a project of this magnitude and technical requirements. Outokumpu is technically and in Martifer’s opinion the leading expert in stainless steel solutions,” says Francisco Loureiro at Martifer.

The first half of the New Street station has opened up for passengers in April 2013. The station will be completed in 2015.

The new stainless steel works was constructed on a "green field" site near the port of Mobile for ThyssenKrupp Stainless LLC, and sold to Outokumpu at the end of 2012. Siemens received the order to equip the plant in 2008. Liquid steel is produced in an electric arc furnace with a tapping weight of 160 tons. The steel is then further processed in a 180-ton AOD converter and a ladle treatment station. Integrated basic automation and a Level 2 process optimization system ensure that all components of the plant interact optimally. In order to minimize the environmental impact, Siemens installed a dedusting system with pulse-jet filters for the electric arc furnace and the AOD converter.

Siemens supplied the complete, single-strand continuous slab caster for the casting section. The bow-type caster has a casting radius of 9 meters and a straight mold. It is designed to produce slabs ranging in width from 800 to 1900 millimeters and thicknesses from 180 to 240 millimeters. The casting speed is 1.3 meters per minute. The plant produces stainless steels of AISI quality grades 200, 300 and 400 for a wide range of applications. The casting plant features a number of technology packages to assure the internal and external quality of the slabs. These include a mold level control, a breakout detection system, a hydraulic mold oscillator and a system to adjust the width of the slabs. The strand containment is equipped with smart segments. The combination of the Dynacs cooling system with internally cooled I-Star rollers offers maximum flexibility in the secondary cooling. The scope of supply also includes the complete basic and process automation, as well as machines for weighing the slabs.

Siemens was responsible for engineering and supplying the equipment, supervising the installation and commissioning work, and providing the training of the customer’s personnel.

Outokumpu conducts a strategic review of its VDM high performance alloys business

Outokumpu has started a strategic review of its high performance alloys or VDM business unit. During this review, Outokumpu will evaluate strategic options for VDM and consider how best to drive continued growth and profitability for the business, within or outside of Outokumpu.

Says Outokumpu CEO Mika Seitovirta: “Given the challenging economic and market environment, we want to investigate strategic options for the VDM business unit with the aim of improving our profitability and strengthening our balance sheet while ensuring the realization of at least EUR 200 million of synergy savings enabled by the Inoxum acquisition.”

Outokumpu acquired VDM as part of Inoxum in 2012. VDM is a global leader in the market for corrosion and heat resistant high-performance materials, such as nickel, titanium and zirconium alloys. VDM serves a wide range of customers in the aerospace, energy, chemical and other industries. In 2012, VDM had sales of EUR 1.3 billion and approximately 2.000 employees.

During the review, the VDM unit will continue to operate within Outokumpu. The strategic review is expected to be finalized before the end of the year.
