Tungsten is a rare metallic element used for manufacturing gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) electrodes. Tungsten Electrodes are available in a range of sizes and lengths and are made up of either pure tungsten or an alloy of tungsten and other rare-earth elements and oxides. Choosing an electrode depends on the base material type and thickness and whether you weld with alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC).

Each electrode is color-coded at the tip to eliminate confusion over its type. Unlike the red-tipped thoriated Tungsten Electrode, which contain 2% thoria, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®’s blue-tipped MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes contain a mix of non-radioactive rare earth elements, eliminating the risk to health posed by thoriated Tungsten Electrodes.

Rapid Purge your Pipes with QuickPurge®

Weld Purging is the act of removing oxygen within the vicinity of a joint when welding, especially when joining metals such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, titanium, zirconium etc. However, completely filling tubes and pipes with expensive inert gas such as argon for weld purging is time consuming.

Whatever the size of pipe, QuickPurge® Systems reduce waiting times so dramatically that they pay for themselves in less than one weld. QuickPurge® is simply inserted into a tube or pipe, inflated within the pipe, restricting the area that is to be welded and removing the oxygen within minutes.

For example, a 36” diameter stainless steel pipe can be purged down to 100 parts per million (ppm) of oxygen in under 32 minutes. Comparing this with weld purging using foam dams or other home-made devices that will outgas heavily into the welding zone, taking many hours.

Time is money! Waiting for pipes to be purged ready for welding can take many hours, depending on the diameter of the pipe being welded and the method chosen for purging.

Freeze sealing pipes for repair or maintenance is an increasingly popular alternative to ‘hot-tapping’ and eliminates the need to shut or drain down a system for repairs and maintenance. These systems work by creating ice plugs (or ‘freeze seals’) either upstream of the repair site or on either side of an area where a pipe system needs to be maintained.

A specially designed flexible jacket is wrapped around the pipe at the point where the freeze is required. A nozzle in the jacket is then coupled to a cylinder of liquid carbon dioxide by means of a high-pressure hose.

When the CO2 is injected into the space between the jacket and the pipe, at a temperature of -78OC, the pipe contents freeze and a secure ‘ice plug’ is formed, which seals the pipe. The ‘ice plug’ forms only in a section of the pipe covered by the jacket, so the resulting rise in pressure is very small and there is no damage to the pipe. The technique can be used safely on iron, lead, stainless steel, copper, brass and plastic pipe.

By not having to drain systems of liquids to make repairs, the savings made are able to justify the low relative cost of the Qwik-Freezer™ System.

When welding titanium, stainless steel and other reactive metal pipework and sheet metalwork, it is important to prevent the welds from oxidising or coming into contact with any air during their welding and cooling periods.

Chrome steel pipe joints, such as those used in the power industry for high pressure, high strength pipework, need to be pre-heated for welding and also require a post weld heat treatment too.

Weld joints of this nature need to be purged of oxygen and welded in an inert atmosphere, to prevent oxidation that leads to loss of corrosion resistance and undesirable change to the metallurgy.

With the high temperatures and length of time at such temperatures, most weld purging systems are unsuitable. However, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® has now developed the HotPurge™ Inflatable Tube and Pipe Purging System for Heat-Treated Chrome Steel Pipe Joints where the temperatures might be as high as 760OC.

Using HotPurge™ Systems allows the purge to be safely continued for up to 24 hours whilst pre-heating, welding and post weld heat-treating with the purge system remaining in place.

Each HotPurge™ is manufactured as standard with PurgeGate® to prevent over inflation of the dams. No matter how high the user raises the pressure in order to deliver more gas flow, PurgeGate® prevents too much pressure being delivered to the inflatable dams, but allows the increased flow, should it be required, to achieve a lower oxygen level, or for faster cooling of the pipework.

The large central collar dramatically reduces the space to be purged and makes it easier to reach the lower oxygen levels faster than with conventional purging systems. Each HotPurge™ System incorporates an innovative central band for easy positioning inside the pipe. This band, known as RootGlo® will illuminate inside the dark pipe, for up to 20 hours, with only 10 minutes previous exposure to daylight.

Each system is available in sizes 6 to 96” (150 to 2440 mm) and both inflatable dams have pull handles securely sewn with high temperature resistant Kevlar thread that will withstand a pulling force of 1,000 lb.

HotPurge™ Tube and Pipe Purging Systems can be used repeatedly for weld purges and will keep the oxygen levels below 100 parts per million (ppm) throughout the welding cycle, ensuring oxide and coke free welds, without the metallurgical imperfections caused by exposure to too much oxygen.

The newly designed, extra long life sensor allows the user to continue to use the monitor for up to three years before the ‘new’ low sensor indicator appears on the screen. Once that icon appears, it provides the user with adequate time to obtain a new sensor, which can be fitted on site without any complicated electrical wiring to change, thereby saving the operator from having to return it to the manufacturer for recalibration and saving the equivalent of 50% of a new monitor.

Time is money! Waiting for pipe joints to be purged ready for welding can take anything up to four hours, depending on the diameter of the pipe being welding and the method chosen for purging.

QuickPurge® III cuts these waiting times so dramatically that they amortise themselves in less than one weld.

A 36” diameter stainless steel pipe for example can be purged down to 100 parts per million (ppm) of oxygen in under 32 minutes. Compare this with purging using foam dams that will outgas heavily into the weld zone and will take hours, not a few minutes.

High speed pipe purging system QuickPurge® is leading the way in the field of purging tube, pipe and pipeline joints over 6” diameter, where oxygen levels are required to be as low as 10 (ppm) or less.

Huntingdon Fusion Techniques, HFT®‘s innovative design of the QuickPurge® System means that zero colour welds will be achieved and there will be no loss of corrosion resistance caused by oxidation.

Using IntaCal®combined with the integrated PurgeGate®device makes it possible to safely inflate the dams with argon gas, prior to releasing it, for purging the space between the dams where the weld joint is located. It is almost impossible for the inflatable dams to burst as a result of undue pressure increase or accidental flow increase of the inflation and purging gas.

All systems are manufactured as standard with a hose for connecting a Weld Purge Monitor® to, which can read oxygen levels down to 10 ppm.

Materials chosen for QuickPurge® are such that they are resistant to the higher weld heat present and at the same time exhibiting lower outgassing rates to prevent weld contamination. For heat-treated chrome steel pipe joints, HFT® manufactures the specialHotPurge™ range for the higher and longer temperature exposure requirements.

QuickPurge® Systems are manufactured for pipe diameters from 6 to 96 inches (150 to 2440 mm) and are equipped with a “QuickFit” coupling for the purge / inflation hose.

The “QuickFit” coupling is fitted with ‘O’ ring for gas tight sealing and stainless steel collet to hold the tube mechanically tight. The coupling is fitted with an anti-release circlip to prevent parts accidentally separating inside the pipe.

The sleeve between the dams on the QuickPurge® Systems reduces the volume to be purged by two thirds, ensuring a really fast purge time down to 10 ppm. Sleeve lengths for each size have been carefully calculated so that the QuickPurge® Systems can be pulled around 90º elbows for the purging of connecting joints.

QuickPurge® Systems are available for each American Pipe Institute (API) pipe diameter, with an expansion range to cover all internal diameters from schedule 10 to schedule 160 and even thicker pipe wall standards.

Return on Investment (ROI) charts are available, to show that the payback for each size will normally be between 1 and 2 welds, giving companies the opportunity to make very significant savings on larger contracts.

These versatile Inflatable Stoppers are used to service a wide variety of industrial applications. As “overnight stoppers” they provide a strong barrier in pipeline activities, to prevent foreign bodies entering the line during down time.

In machining applications, they can be inserted below a horizontal flange on a vertical pipe, to prevent machining fluid from falling below into expensive machinery such as pumps and turbines etc.

When welding large tanks and vessels, stoppers inflated with air can dramatically reduce the volume inside, so that the argon purging process takes little time and uses the minimum of expensive gas. The stoppers pay for themselves in one weld and can be used multiple times.

Other applications include leak testing of pipework systems, whether commercial, domestic or industrial, on site thermoforming of bends in plastic materials and fiber-optic constructions projects.

All Inflatable Stoppers are manufactured with a strong internal inflatable bag covered in waterproof sewn polyurethane coated nylon for low friction and to prevent the production of static electricity or accidental sparking.

When welding pipes and tubes that need to go through high temperature thermal cycles before, during and after welding, it is usually important to purge the insides with an inert gas, to prevent oxidation and scaling and to ensure a good internal weld profile.

In many cases there is very little room to manoeuvre weld purging systems so that they are protected from the high temperatures associated with the pre- and post-weld heating processes and the operators have to purchase the more sophisticated heat protected systems such as the HFT® HotPurge™ models.

However, in some cases, there can be sufficient length in the tube or pipe structure, that a normal Weld Purging System can be used.

Huntingdon Fusion Techniques Ltd has been able to use its development team to manufacture a variety of different Weld Purging Systems for such tubes and pipes, where the the inflatable dams can be kept outside of the heated areas.

Special high temperature resistant gas hose material, ensures that the purge dams stay inflated, firmly sealing the purged void to protect the weld throughout the whole thermal and welding cycles.
