At this year’s Alihankinta Subcontracting Fair in Tampere, Finland, Ovako launched its new hollow bar M-Steel® 280 developed to offer component manufacturers design, machinability and cost advantages while also promoting its greatly increased service package and distribution operation in Finland, Ovako Metals Oy Ab.

Both enhanced offerings are intended to provide customers with significant advantages, both in terms of material consistency and availability, with a range of customized services that are fine tuned to fully meet, or even exceed customers’ expectations and improve their competitive edge.

Developing the new M-Steel 280, a low carbon, micro alloyed steel 20MnV6 M, as hollow bar makes it suitable for even more demanding applications by combining high strength with excellent machinability. Because the material is based on M-Steel technology, which stands for machinability, it also facilitates higher cutting speeds and, conversely, superior tool life.

(Ovako M-Steel 280 Tubes): New Ovako hollow bar M-Steel 280 is a low carbon, micro alloyed steel 20MnV6 M, combining high strength with excellent machinability and weldability.

Seminars on the new M-Steel 280 hollow bar were held on the Ovako stand on each of the three days of the exhibition. On Wednesday, September 28th, Åke Nilsson, Product & Application Turning Specialist, Sandvik Coromant Sverige AB, presented a seminar on machining advantages using M-Steel.

“M-Steel technology is unique as it enhances the machining process by forming a protective film on the cutting tool. This promotes increased cutting speeds, while extending tool life, reducing tool changes and enhancing productivity,” explained Göran Nyström, Executive Vice President of Group Marketing and Technology at Ovako. “New hollow bar M-Steel 280 not only reduces machining time; it also means customers can increase their productivity without the need for capital investment.”

A major advantage of M-Steel 280 hollow bar, close to finished component sizes, is that its use can eliminate a complete machining process where a central bore is required. This helps cut down on production time significantly, reduce component costs and increase profitability.

Also on the stand, steel and metals distributor Ovako Metals Oy Ab will take the opportunity to highlight the latest facilities which have been added to its distribution centre in nearby Tampere. The centre now boasts the capability to provide customers with a complete first stage in the production chain.

Turning design possibilities into reality

As the pressure mounts for designers to develop smaller, lighter and stronger components, clean engineering steels from Ovako, with their increased fatigue strength, can turn possibilities into reality.

Showing its range of clean engineering steels at Subcon, Ovako will highlight the huge design potential of its materials in facilitating the production of stronger, lighter, more efficient and compact components.

With its increased fatigue strength operationally proven BQ-Steel® offers outstanding high performance characteristics backed by a long history of exceptional bearing quality steel. Originally developed to overcome fatigue strength issues in bearing assemblies subsequent developments make it available for all types of applications.

Offering up to three times the fatigue performance of conventional steels, IQ-Steel® (Isotropic Quality) ultra clean steels not only have the capability to handle high, complex and cyclic loading, but they can also significantly improve the performance of critical components. This provides customers with distinct design advantages particularly where safety critical components are required. The purity and highly consistent quality of IQ-Steel is as a result of far fewer and much smaller non-metallic inclusion within the steel’s composition. This produces ultra clean steel that performs under much greater operational conditions with properties that match more expensive remelted steels.

Final costs per component are also significantly lower when using M-Steel material grades as the treatment helps extend the life of the cutting tool by as much as 2-3 times.

In trials against comparative materials M-Steel achieved up to 30% higher cutting speeds while maintaining an excellent final surface quality. The costs are also significantly lower since the life of the cutting tools is improved by 2-3 times.

Also new from Ovako is the addition of new sizes in the range of ultra clean, surface removed and inspected Ovako SR-100 wire, which delivers improved and consistent product quality. Available in a variety of steel grades and a range of sizes now from 11 – 26.5 mm diameter, SR-100 wire can be supplied zinc phosphate, soap coated and/or oiled. The cleaner, defect-free and consistent quality of the steel wire enables fine tuning of production methods, including robotic, and can significantly reduce machining resulting in less waste and a better working environment ensuring high quality of finished products.
